HAITIAN HERITAGE MONTH

Updated: Jan 2, 2023

By: Prisca Liliane

"Haiti is a proud nation, rich in heritage and spirituality. How they have been able to not only survive but thrive is a testament to how the Haitian people have come together to rebuild, create new families, and care for one another."-

Michael Arden

While we are continuing to focus on our mental, emotional and physical health- I would like to take the time to highlight the monthlong celebration of Haiti. This is the country where my mother, and those of my bloodline before her, were born and raised. This lovely nation is where my ancestors fought and defeated the French in 1804- becoming the FIRST free Black nation in the Western Hemisphere.

"Haitian Heritage Month is a nationally recognized month celebrated in May every year."- National Today. The start of the summer season is a perfect time to celebrate the vibrant culture, distinct art, delectable cuisine, and to get to know people of Haitian origin.

Haitian Heritage Month is an expansion of the annual Haitian Flag Day, which falls on May 18. "The flag day is observed with much pomp and splendor even by the diaspora."- National Today . For years, many of us who are within the Haitian and Caribbean diaspora, have made sure

to celebrate our cultural heritage with parades, flag raising, conferences, radio and TV programs, festivals, and exhibits. "This pride-filled month continues to bring about exciting events within the Haitian community and bring memorable souvenirs, such as patriotic songs recalling the creation of the flag blue and red and the symbol of unity that made us free forever."- Haitian Treasures.
